Migrating on-premises email to Exchange Online

A financial technology organisation moved its legacy on-premises email system to Exchange Online to gain reliability, stronger security and room to grow.

Engagement led by our founder, AH Gazi. Client name and identifying details are withheld for confidentiality; the diagram shows the general architecture, not the client's systems.

The challenge

Email ran on a legacy on-premises system. For a financial technology business, that meant carrying the reliability risk, security patching and capacity planning of a mail server in-house, for a service the whole organisation depends on every day.

The objective

  • Move all email from the on-premises system to Exchange Online.
  • Keep communication running throughout the migration.
  • Strengthen email security and data protection in the new platform.

What was delivered

  • Exchange Online migrationMigration of the legacy on-premises mail system to Exchange Online in Microsoft 365.
  • Mail security & data protectionMail security and data protection configured in the new environment.
  • Scalable cloud serviceA move from self-managed mail infrastructure to a scalable cloud service.

Security considerations

Moving mail to the cloud was used as the moment to raise the security baseline: email protection and data-protection settings were configured in Exchange Online rather than carried over unchanged from the old system.

Result

OUTCOME 01

Email now runs on Exchange Online instead of an on-premises server.

OUTCOME 02
